Epicure Consultant Patrice Hooper on her island roots and how to be a part of the change.  

I still hold my island roots close to my heart   

I grew up in the US Virgin Islands before moving to Maryland for college. Although I have lived in the continental United States for most of my adult life,
I still hold my Caribbean roots close to my heart. In the islands we enjoy more savory things for breakfast, and tea triumphs over coffee. It isn't unusual to have Johnny cakes or fritters and fish to start the day.

All over the islands you can find various versions of patties which are also known as pate' or empanadas. They can be filled with beef, chicken, fish, or vegetables and served baked or fried. In my home, beef is the favorite. These dishes are enjoyed by native islanders and transplants alike.   

Regardless of race or nationality, we are all individuals  

When asked my opinion about Black History Month,
I have to say it actually saddens me that we are still such strangers to our neighbors—fellow humans—that Black History Month is even necessary. Regardless of race or nationality, we are all individuals.  It's so important to recognize that just as Caucasian, Asian, Latin and other people came from varied backgrounds and cultures, that is also true of people of Black people as well. Foods, traditions, dress, musical, written and verbal styles are influenced by where we grew up, what our experiences were and how our family tree developed. Mine is blend of Afro-Caribbean, French, Spanish and Danish. Because of that, the foods and music I enjoy and the cultural things I engage in are quite varied.  

At the core, people are more alike than different 

I live near and work with a very diverse group of people. Getting to know different people will enhance your life.  Invite someone new to join your family group for lunch or happy hour after work. Consider taking a cooking class or something culturally diverse simply to broaden and enrich your personal scope. You're likely to gain some new insights, the most important is that, at the core, people are more alike than different.
