Navajo Tacos with Frybread

Family traditions are a big part of enjoying good. We love to see our Consultants and Customers “Epicure-ize” legacy recipes, family faves, and to add a twist on our best-selling Meal Solutions. Epicure Consultant Jessie Ross—a proud Native from the Algonquin tribe—recently shared this recipe and we just knew we had to add it to The Feed so you can try it too! The recipe incorporates a fry bread recipe passed down from Jessie’s aunt, along with our Taco Seasoning and Ooey Gooey Queso Hot Dip Mix.

Frybread is part of my heritage and Navajo tacos have been something my family has enjoyed for so many years. I m make them for my own children now and now being able to add epicure to one of my favourite traditional family meals is absolutely amazing. - Jessie Ross, Epicure Consultant

FRY BREAD

1 cup all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup plus 2 Tablespoons milk or water (start with 3/4 cup depending on the time of year)

Mix dry ingredients. Add liquid and combine until dough forms a ball. Set aside for at least 30 minutes.

  • While the dough is rising, prep the meat using Epicure’s Taco Seasoning, following the directions on the package.

  • Prep veggies: lettuce, tomatoes, onions, etc.

  • Get your Ooey Gooey Queso Hot Dip ready

  • After all your prep is done, it’s time to work your dough

  • Make taco sized discs and put a small hole in the center so it doesn’t bubble

  • Fill a wok with about 1 inch of cooking oil and bring it to temperature, about 365F.

  • Drop 2-3 bread discs into the work for a few seconds, until the colour changes, and flip them. Once they are golden brown, remove with tongs and place them on paper towels to drain.

  • When all the fry bread is ready, layer it on a Sheet Pan for a sharing platter or serve them on individual plates so everyone at the table can load them up just how they like them. Layer with Taco meat, veggies, cheese, and Ooey Gooey Queso.

  • Add extras like jalapeños, green onions, black olives—anything you like on nachos!
