#EpicLife: from the couch to the runway in 90 days

We’re celebrating our one-year #EpicAnniversary and throwing back to Conference last year in Las Vegas when Patrice Hooper strutted the stage to celebrate her #EpicLife Challenge success.

It's been one year since you walked on-stage at Epicure Conference in Vegas! How are you feeling?

I feel great! I actually have more energy and feel younger than before.

How have you stayed motivated?

I did lapse for a period of time. I got distracted by all that was happening in the world and found comfort back on my sofa! I noticed I was having trouble getting up and downstairs again and my eyes had taken on a dull lifeless tinge. I have too much I want to do and enjoy to just let myself atrophy.

What do you do to keep active?

Walk! I am not a big fan of exercise. I love dancing but in the current climate, there isn’t anywhere to go. Sorry, dancing alone in my living room is not my idea of a good time... not enough to do it several times a week. I started walking for about 20 minutes a day, which became 30 minutes. Now I try to get in 3 miles a day (1 at lunch, 2 before dinner) and up it to 4 or more on the weekends. At first, it was draining. Now I find it energizing and is great to reduce stress!

What motivates you to keep up with your Epic Life goals?

Both of my parents died young at ages 60 and 64. I have so much I want to do and experience in this life that I need more time! I also love how much more I can accomplish when I eat better and exercise. I don’t tire as easily. My mental clarity is better. I dress better. My skin is clearer.

What advice would you give someone just beginning the Epic Life Challenge?

Keep trying. I definitely don’t do it perfectly. I struggle but I start over again tomorrow. There is no magic in Monday! If you had a bad Tuesday or Wednesday, don’t throw the rest of the week away waiting for Magic Monday to start anew. Also, do not compare yourself to others! I love looking at the pictures of people who dropped 100 pounds. That has not been my experience but I am not willing to reclaim the 20 or 30 that is my reality. I love where I am now and look forward to a healthier tomorrow.

What's your favorite meal/recipe to stay on-track with?

Smoothies and Mason Jar Salads are my besties! I make my salad jars and portion out my smoothie ingredients for the week ahead of time. It is easy to grab a jar, make a quick smoothie, and take them with me to work. I enjoy a hearty breakfast or brunch on weekends at home but having my breakfast and lunch with me during the week keeps me from grabbing carry out!

What are your goals for the next year?

I have stopped putting a scale number as my primary goal. When I do that the scale rules me and if I am not making progress I lose sight of what I have done. My goal for the next year is to keep walking, continue eating clean and find one other activity that I enjoy.

Any final thoughts?

Before walking on stage and having the makeover last year I had really fallen into a ‘fat old lady’ mentality in how I dressed and acted. My wardrobe has changed. My attitude has changed. I am embracing who and where I am today because tomorrow is not promised. Thank you, Epicure! You gave me so much more than a walk on stage, you reminded me that I am the star of my own life. Forever grateful!
